What kind of nervous flyer are you?

Fear of flying isn't one thing. For some people it's the bumps, for others the closed door, the takeoff roar, the build-up, or the racing heart. Seven gentle questions will point you to the explanations and tools that fit you best.

The takeoff and landing worrier

The start and the end of the flight are where your attention sharpens: the roar, the climb, the thumps and the changing engine sounds.

Takeoff and landing are the busiest parts of a flight, and the most full of sounds and sensations. The engines get loud, then quieter. The wheels thump into place. The plane banks, levels and sometimes feels like it's dropping a little. Every one of these has an ordinary, planned reason.

When you know what's coming, a sound stops being a surprise and becomes a checkpoint: “that's the gear coming up, right on time.” Many nervous flyers find that learning the order of a normal flight takes a lot of the sting out of these moments.

What can help

  • Read through the normal sounds of a flight once before you go, so each one feels familiar.
  • During the takeoff roll, breathe in for four and out for six. The climb only lasts a few minutes.
  • Remember that a go-around (an aborted landing) is a normal safety choice, not an emergency.
