What kind of nervous flyer are you?

Fear of flying isn't one thing. For some people it's the bumps, for others the closed door, the takeoff roar, the build-up, or the racing heart. Seven gentle questions will point you to the explanations and tools that fit you best.

The control and closed-in worrier

For you it's less about the plane and more about the feeling of being shut in, with someone else at the controls.

Not being able to step outside, or to steer, is a very human thing to find hard. Lots of people who are fine on a bumpy flight feel uneasy as the door closes. It isn't a weakness. It's your mind asking for a sense of choice.

The good news is that you have more choice than it feels like. You can pick your seat, tell the crew you're nervous, and plan small things to do with your hands and attention. And the people flying the plane are a trained, checked team, with many layers of support around them on the ground.

What can help

  • Choose an aisle seat if you like to know you can stand up and stretch when the seat belt sign is off.
  • Tell a flight attendant you're a nervous flyer. They hear it often and are glad to know.
  • Plan your first 20 minutes: a breathing exercise, a downloaded show, a podcast. Small choices bring back a sense of control.
