This page is general information only. It isn't medical advice and doesn't recommend any medicine or dose. Please talk to your doctor, GP or pharmacist about what's right for you.

Medicine is one option, not the only one

The NHS lists several ways to treat a phobia, including fear of flying:1

  • Talking therapies such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)
  • Hypnotherapy
  • Medicines such as antidepressants, beta blockers and sedatives that calm and relax

In England you can refer yourself directly to an NHS talking therapies service without seeing a GP first.1 Elsewhere, your doctor is the place to start. If you're considering medicine for a flight, ask well before you travel.

Getting through security (US)

At US airport security, medications in pill form are allowed in both carry-on and checked bags. As with every item, the final decision at the checkpoint rests with the TSA officer.3

Liquid medicines are an exemption to the 3-1-1 liquids rule, so the quart-sized bag and 3.4-ounce (100 ml) container limit don't apply to them. Any liquid that alarms during screening gets additional screening.4

How to pack your medicines

The CDC's travel advice is practical and applies to any medicine:2

  • Pack medicines in your carry-on, in case your checked luggage is lost or delayed.
  • Keep them in their original, labelled containers.
  • Take enough for the whole trip, plus extra in case of travel delays.
  • Bring copies of your prescriptions, including generic names.
  • Ask your prescriber for a note if you use controlled substances or injectable medicines.
  • Crossing time zones? Ask your provider about timing. The CDC says medicines should be taken according to the time since your last dose, not the local time.

Travelling abroad

Each country has its own laws on medicines, and something that's ordinary at home may be restricted elsewhere. The CDC suggests checking with your destination's embassy, and those of any layover countries, before you go.2

Other things that help on the day

Whatever you decide about medicine, the same simple tools help many people: slow breathing, knowing what the normal sounds and bumps are, and telling the crew you're nervous. Try our in-flight pack and How to calm down on a plane.

Quick answers

Can I take anxiety medication on a plane?

Yes, medications (pills) are allowed in both carry-on and checked bags at US airport security, though the final decision at the checkpoint rests with the TSA officer. The CDC recommends packing medicines in your carry-on in their original labelled containers.

Should I take something for fear of flying?

That's a question for your doctor or GP, who knows your health and other medicines. The NHS lists medicines among the treatment options for phobias, alongside talking therapies such as CBT and hypnotherapy.

Are liquid medicines limited to 3.4 ounces?

No. The TSA lists medications as an exemption to the 3-1-1 liquids rule, so liquid medicines can be larger than 3.4 ounces (100 ml).

Do I need a doctor's note for my medicine?

The CDC suggests copies of your prescriptions, and a note from your prescriber if you use controlled substances or injectable medicines, and checking the rules at your destination and any layover country.
