The short answer

If your plans change, contact the hotel or rental company through its official website or app, or use the details in your booking confirmation. Many changes and cancellations can be done online in a few taps.

If an airline delay or cancellation means you need a room, ask the airline first. Many large US airlines commit to a hotel when an overnight disruption is within their control; DOT's dashboard shows each one's commitments.1

Rental car companies

Tips when plans change

  • Tell them early. If you'll arrive late, let the hotel or rental location know your new time, so your room or car is held.
  • Check opening hours for rental locations, especially off-airport ones.
  • Keep confirmations and receipts in one place. If an airline covers costs, you may need them.
  • Booked through a travel site? Changes may need to go through that site rather than the hotel or rental company.

The calm takeaway: a changed flight usually means one or two quick messages: one to your hotel, one to your rental company. Their official sites and apps are the fastest way to do both.

Quick answers

My flight was cancelled. Who pays for the hotel?

There's no federal requirement, but many large US airlines commit to a hotel when an overnight disruption is within their control. DOT's Airline Cancellation and Delay Dashboard shows each airline's commitments. Ask the airline first.

What should I do about my rental car if my flight is delayed?

Contact the rental company through its official site or app, or the location directly, and tell them your new arrival time. Some locations have limited hours, so it's worth letting them know early.

Where do I find a hotel's official phone number?

On the hotel chain's official website or app, or in your booking confirmation. Be careful with numbers from search ads, which can be third parties.
